Residency training in colon and rectal surgery is one year although a few programs offer an optional laboratory or research year. Certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery requires prior certification by the American board of Surgery (ABS). Therefore, with few exceptions, applicants for residency training programs in colon and rectal surgery must complete an approved residency in general surgery and be eligible for examination by the ABS.
