Why a Prosthodontist, Not a Cosmetic Dentist
Recognized as one of nine dental specialties by the American Dental Association (ADA), prosthodontics involves the diagnosis and treatment of serious oral health problems, as well as the care of patients in need of restorative and reconstructive dentistry. Prosthodontics requires two to three additional years of university schooling above and beyond general dentistry school.
Cosmetic dentistry is not one of the nine recognized specialties and requires no additional training outside of the minimum four years of general dentistry schooling. Most cosmetic dentists receive training during weekend continuing education workshops and are not certified specialists with additional years of university training like prosthodontists.
