The Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball (Can-Am League) and the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs (Atlantic League) today jointly announced the transfer of the Newark Bears, who have played as a member of the Atlantic League since inception, to the Can-Am League for the 2011 season.

We are once again delighted to work with the Can-Am League, said Atlantic League Founder & CEO Frank Boulton. Bears Baseball can continue in Newark for many years to come and build upon it's natural geographical rivalries within the Can-Am League thanks to this cooperative effort.

It is exciting for the Can-Am League to be able to add Newark to our roster, commented Miles Wolff, Commissioner of the Can-Am League. The Bears have a great history, and they will be an important part of our league. Our relationship with the Atlantic League enables us both to work together in the strengthening of independent baseball.

New Bears owner Tom Cetnar shared the sentiments of Mr.'s Boulton and Wolff. The Bears are excited to be part of the Can-Am League and we look forward to a friendly rivalry with the Jackals and Skyhawks, said Cetnar. Off the field the Bears, Skyhawks and Jackals will unite to serve all of the residents of Essex, Union and Sussex Counties. Our organizations are committed to the fans and look forward to delivering a great product.

In addition to the Newark Bears, the Can-Am League lineup for 2011 will include the Brockton Rox, New Jersey Jackals, Pittsfield Colonials, Quebec Capitales, Sussex Skyhawks and Worcester Tornadoes.

The Can-Am League 2011 season will begin May 26 and the final regular season game will be September 5.

The Sporting News recently ranked the Top 20 Smartest Athletes, and former New Jackals and current A's reliever Craig Breslow (Pictured) landed in the top spot.

A 2009 Wall Street Journal story had dubbed Breslow the "smartest man in baseball," but this latest ranking is an even bigger feather in his academic cap.

The left-hander graduated from Yale in 2002, where he pulled a 3.5 grade-point average while majoring in molecular biophysics and biochemistry.

"At some point, somebody is going to figure out my secret," Breslow joked Wednesday. "You can only fool people for so long. While it lasts, I'll enjoy it."

Two other Bay Area athletes made The Sporting News list -- 49ers quarterback Alex Smith (No. 11) and Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray (No. 16).

Breslow has made an impact off the field with his Strike 3 Foundation, which raises money for pediatric cancer research. His work was recognized Wednesday when former A's pitcher Dave Stewart presented him with the Dave Stewart Community Service Award.

"It's probably just another (source) of ribbing and teasing," he said of The Sporting News' ranking. "But there's a lot of things people could be writing or saying about me, so as long as it's positive I'll take it."

The Skyhawks have announced today the release of pitcher/pitching coach Duaner Sanchez. Sanchez appeared in 28 games during the 2010 season, throwing 26.1 innings with an ERA of 3.76.

Sanchez, a 30-year-old right hander from the Dominican Republic, made his Major League debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2002. Since then, he has pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres.

Sanchez was part of the 2006 New York Mets, a team that finished tied for baseball's best record at 97-65. He was an integral part of the Mets' bullpen, amassing a 5-1 record with 14 holds and a 2.60 ERA in 49 games. His season was cut short due to a car accident that resulted in a separated shoulder.

Sanchez pitched four scoreless innings in the 2006 World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic, a team that made it to the semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Cuba.

Over the course of his pro career, Sanchez has a 19-11 record with a 4.10 ERA and 214 strikeouts over 298 2/3 innings.

The Skyhawks lost thier final game on the 2010 season, a 4-3 loss to the Pittsfield Colonials.

The Skyhawks finished the first half of the season with a 25-21 record, good for third place in the Can-Am League first staff standings. However, the second half of the season was a much different story. The Skyhawks managed only 10 wins in 45 games. In thier last 20 games, the Skyhawks managed only 3 wins.

The 2010 Can-Am League playoffs begin on Wednesday and will match Pittsfield vs. Brockton and Quebec vs. Worcester/New Jersey.

Pittsfield pounded out ten runs on eleven hits in a 10-1 blowout win over Sussex. RF Angel Molina hit three doubles and came around to score on each one, driving in two Colonials. SS Matt Nandin added three hits of his own, including two doubles and two RBI. 2B Wes Fink contributed a key bases-loaded triple with two outs in the sixth while the game was still within reach for Sussex. DH Caleb Stewart knocked an RBI double in the top of the sixth to account for the Skyhawks' lone run. RHP Miguel Flores picked up his tenth win on the season for three innings of relief work for Pittsfield.
