QUICK BITE/North Arlington, New Jersey; Leave the Gun, Take the Pizza
Which is America's most famous pizzeria? Is it Lombardi's in Manhattan? Perhaps Spago in Beverly Hills? May I humbly suggest Pizzaland in North Arlington. Since 1999, millions of television viewers have ''driven by'' the tiny brick-front building during the opening credits of ''The Sopranos.'' With the HBO series finally back with new episodes, I thought the time was right to pull over.
Long before Tony woke up one morning and got himself a gun, Pizzaland was an institution on Belleville Pike, having opened in 1965 in North Arlington, New Jersey. Pickup and delivery seem to be the norm, but there is limited seating in the wood-paneled shop: three tables for two and four stools at the counter. When I visited, most of that counter space was devoted to the pizzamaking process. Three guys feverishly prepared pie after pie, while a fourth fellow folded boxes. Even I was asked to pitch in, to hold open the door for a woman exiting with multiple pies.
Personal pizzas are $3.50, regular $7.50, and large $9.50. A ''double dough'' (round Sicilian style) is $12. Toppings are $2 each. Salads,

sandwiches and appetizers are also available. I tried the plain pizza -- always the best way to judge. Pizzaland's has a crisp, chewy crust, a subtle sauce and is cooked long enough so the cheese is a little brown in spots. A real nice slice.
They have not resorted to any cheap ''Sopranos''-related gimmicks: There is no Tony Pepperoni or Carmela Mozzarella. The only nod to the pizzeria's television stardom: an autographed photo of Tony, Silvio, Paulie Walnuts, Christopher and Big Pussy. But Pizzaland is beholden to no one. On the opposite wall is a picture of the Corleones. JACK SILBERT
