WHAT IS YOUR LOT IN LIFE?
Within each of our lives God has planned a purpose, a way in which we will be fulfilled and He will be glorified. Some of us have chosen that way yet struggle in our efforts to continually stay on that path. Others have never found that way because there is something, someone in their life that is blocking them from seeing what God has for them.
Abram was like that. God had something awesome in store for him and yet he allowed someone to block him from obtaining that promise. That someone was Lot. Go with me to Genesis 11:31, 12:1-4. Abram was from Ur. Ur means light. So his family was moving from Ur to Canaan. According to Vine’s Canaan was synonymous with religious and moral perversions of every kind. We all know that God’s plan for your life is not the result of what you came out of in terms of your lineage, but what God sees in you. Although Abram was with a family that was living the “light” and headed for darkness, God stopped Abram midway and told him to “get out of thy country and from thy kindred”.
God saw that Abram was headed the wrong way. What his family was about was not what God wanted for him. What God was really saying to Abram was STOP! You’re going the wrong way. And God has said that same thing to many of us. Did we stop? Some did and some didn’t. And some did exactly what Abram did.
Abram listened to all of the promises that God had told him would be his and he liked what he heard. See at this point, Abram was obedient to what God was telling him to do because he wanted what God had for him. Are we not just like Abram? He didn’t obey God because he loved and honored Him. He obeyed Him because God was going to make him a great nation. How many of you go to church because you are believing for God to do something awesome in your life and not just because you love Him and want to worship Him? Some of you think, if I get up and go to church and try to do what I think God wants me to do, maybe He’ll love me more and give me what I want.
God cannot love us anymore today than He did yesterday. You can’t get good enough to make God love you anymore, nor can you get good enough to make God give you anymore than He already plans to give. When you are the object and not Jesus, you obey but not totally. God told Abram to leave his kindred. But we see in verse 4 that Lot went with him. Now it was all right to take Sari because God saw them as one. God doesn’t even mention Sari in verse 4 because she is part of Abram. But he took Lot, his nephew.
Lot means veil. Because Abram took “veil”, he was unable to see what God had for him. He heard what God had for him, but he could not see it. And how many know that until you get a vision for what God has for you it will never materialize. Abram had the desire, God placed it in his spirit, but he had no vision for becoming a great nation. He was between the darkness and light. But he had covered himself with a veil and could not see spiritually. And because of that veil, Lot, Abram wasted 25 years before God could make him a great nation.
What is your Lot in life? What is preventing you from seeing – having vision, for what God has in store for you? Abram’s Lot was his nephew. Your lot maybe a child, a husband, a wife, a girlfriend, a boss. Your Lot is whatever has been consuming your time, your talent, your money and masking your God given purpose in life. Your Lot doesn’t have to be a person. It could be your attitude, your habits, your depression, your sin. Lot’s come in various forms and at various seasons in our lives, but they all prevent us from seeing clearly the direction that God wants us to go in pursuing His plan for our lives.
