Allwood Funeral Home was founded in 1959 by Harold and Veronica Porter as a branch location of the Mason & Porter Funeral Home of Clifton founded in 1935. The physical structure dates back to the 1800s when two farm houses, one moved from across the road, were joined together. The buildings and lands were used at that time by the Kenter family as a horse breeding stable and extended into the Brighton Road section of Allwood. The land was eventually sold off parcel by parcel. The main house and barn were purchased by the Travers family and used as a private residence until 1959 when the home was purchased by Harold Porter and converted into a funeral home.

Originally the funeral home consisted to two chapels, one large by the standard of the time, and the other a smaller, more intimate setting. In 1976 plans were made to remove the barn and add on the present day chapels and garages. The home now consists of three chapels, the two main chapels are 45' x 60' and are separated by a folding wall that when collapsed provides over 5000 square feet of chapel space. The third chapel remains virtually unchanged and retains a cozy yet dignified appearance. In 1986 an additional parking lot was purchased from MidLantic Bank to increase the parking facilities. The two parking lots and ample on-street parking provide almost 100 available spaces for family and visitors.
Constant improvements both internally and on the grounds make Allwood Funeral Home the beautiful, stately, home it has been for over forty years. In the early 1990's the funeral home underwent renovations to provide handicap ramps and facilities for its guests and in the spring and summer of the year 2000 the grounds were improved by removing overgrown shrubbery and replacing them with the beautiful flower beds that now dominate the buildings front and rear entrances.
The building and grounds are maintained by our staff and three generations of Porters who regard the building and grounds not only as a business and service to the community but as home.
