FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Flemington NJ - November 8, 2010) – Hunterdon Prevention Resources (HPR) hosted its Annual Fall Conference on October 28, 2010. The sold-out Conference was held in collaboration with the Hunterdon County Department of Human Services and Department of Education, Municipal Alliances, Safe Communities Coalition, Hunterdon Hispanos and Hunterdon Helpline.

Hunterdon Prevention Resources (HPR) is committed to providing programs and services that not only combat substance abuse, but seek to promote wellness in our community. HPR’s reputation is that we work collaboratively with all segments of our community, and respond to emerging trends with excellent programming.

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and our partners at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are pleased to announce $21 million in new Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program grants to 161 communities, ten new DFC Mentoring grants and ten Continuation Mentoring grants across the United States. HPR was the only agency awarded this prestigious grant in the state of New Jersey in 2009. The focus will work on reducing the use of underage drinking, marijuana and tobacco among our youth.

Operation Take Back New Jersey was very successful. We increased participation and collection sites state wide from last year’s Operation Medicine Cabinet, which targeted removing unused and expired medications.
Over 365 local police and sheriff departments in all of New Jersey’s 21 counties, hosted collection sites, where New Jersey residents came out in force to support Operation Take Back New Jersey and rid their homes of unused, unwanted, and expired medicines, clearing out their homes of over 14,436 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medication. Keep in mind, pills typically do not weigh very much.

How about "Tussing"?
Recent research shows that while parents are aware of warnings against the dangers of illicit street drugs, both prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicine often are overlooked as potential threats. Data collected in 2009 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for its Monitoring the Future study estimate the intentional abuse of cough medicine among eighth, tenth, and twelfth graders is at 3.8 percent, 6 percent, and 5.9 percent, respectively.

Perhaps the biggest challenge coalitions face regarding Rx abuse is to acknowledge the balance between supporting the rights of individuals who genuinely need these medications and helping to ensure that medicines are not shared or misused or abused. Coalitions can play an important role in educating and changing behaviors on both sides of the fence. Behavior change begins with “busting the myths of Rx abuse.”

Do you know the facts about alcohol? Here are some common myths:

Do you know the facts about marijuana? Here are some common myths:
MYTH: Marijuana is harmless.
FACT: Marijuana is the most widly used illegal drug among youth today and is more potent than ever.Marijuana use can lead to a host of significant health, social, learning, and behavioral problems at a crucial time in a young person's development. Getting high also impairs judgment, which can lead to risky decision making on issues like sex, criminal activity, or riding with someone who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. According to the National Center on Addiction (CASA) at Columbia University, teens who use drugs are five times more likely to have sex than teens who do not use drugs. Getting high also contributes to general apathy, irresponsible behavior and risky choices.
MYTH: You can't get addicted to marijuana.
FACT: Don't be fooled by popular beliefs. Kids can get hooked on pot. Research shows that marijuana use can lead to addiction. Each year, more kids enter treatment with a primary diagnosis of marijuana dependence than for all other illegal drugs combined.
MYTH: There's not much parents can do to stop their kids from "experimenting" with marijuana.
