The trouble with AFUE ratings: what's the real efficiency of home heating systems?

U.S. Coast Guard cuts nearly 40% of heating fuel consumption with installations of System 2000 in Kodiak, Alaska.

Almost 40% average savings achieved by replacing 85%-86% AFUE cast iron boilers with high efficiency heating System 2000.
In this multi-year study, the U.S. Coast Guard in Kodiak, Alaska, replaced (24) new 85% and 86% AFUE cast iron boilers of various makes, indirect water heaters, and electric water heaters with System 2000 in residences.
The tremendous savings led to the replacement of another (150) boilers with high efficiency heating System 2000 as part of a Super Energy Saving Performance Contract (Super ESPC) which is run by the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). This project capitalizes on the expertise and financing of the ESPC contractor to assist the Coast Guard in complying with the recent Executive Order which requires all Government agencies to reduce their energy use by 20% by 2015. The Coast Guard also realized operations and maintenance savings with System 2000 boilers over the other models. The FEMP takes advantage of real efficiency over AFUE, and you can too! System 2000 produces super efficient high output hot water
With System 2000, hot water is readily available through a high performance hot water storage tank. System 2000 replenishes hot water as needed, and anticipates when no additional hot water is required. At the end of a hot water call, the burner* automatically shuts down, the Hybrid Energy Recovery® cycle recovers heat left in the boiler and delivers it to the hot water storage tank so no energy is left wasted in the boiler.
*System 2000 is fuel neutral and operates with an oil burner, natural gas burner or propane burner.

System 2000 is available as a natural gas boiler, oil boiler, or propane boiler

All Frontier EK1, EK2 and EK3 models run with either natural gas, oil heat, propane or bioheat (B5) fuel sources and can be converted between fuels with a simple burner* change. The rest of the heating system stays the same this includes the boiler, water heater, thermostats, zones, Digital Energy Manager and more.
*Natural gas burner or propane burner use a simple orifice change. Oil burner change required for oil conversion.

Looking for a furnace? System 2000 works seamlessly in furnace and boiler applications.

A boiler heats water through a pressure vessel (or heat exchanger), and the water distributes this heat through piping with a circulator or pump. This high efficiency hydronic distribution typically has losses of less than 5%, delivering much more of your fuel dollars than conventionally ducted distribution systems. Although boilers typically heat copper fin baseboard or other convectors, it is also very common to distribute to standing cast iron radiation, unit heaters, radiant in-floor tubing, snow melt systems, pools, spas, hot tubs, and hydro-air (or forced air furnace systems with duct work). This is especially beneficial because all heat and hot water can be produced with a single high efficiency boiler, which can easily distribute heat to multiple zones, although ducts suffer from the same distribution losses as furnaces.
