Obtaining a NJ Permit for a 16 year old As with any driver, before being able to drive, a 16 year old must first obtain a driver's Permit issued by the NEW JERSEY (NJ) DMV (MVC). By law, the 16 year old learner's permit may only be obtained through a NJ state certified driving school. This is done in one of two ways. The first way is the student will take a test in school (not all New Jersey schools offer this program), and if they pass, they will simply go with a NJ driving school to the DMV to get the permit (the high school is not authorized to issue the actual permit). The second method of obtaining a New Jersey permit for a 16 year old is in a situation where the student has not taken the written permit test in school, (or simply did not pass the exam given in school). In such an instance, they may go take the written permit test at the DMV (MVC), and they too may only go with a NJ state certified driving school. The NJ written permit test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. The student must get 40 out of 50 correct in order to pass. Please see our sample NJ DMV (MVC) written permit test. When going to the DMV to obtain a permit, the student should bring the following:

6 points of state approved I.D. (such as an original, state issued birth certificate, or passport, Social security card, marriage certificate etc.) and proof of address
$10 (the DMV charges $10 for the permit)
If the student has passed the exam in school: bring the "blue card" or "score card". This is a card issued by the high school, which states that the student has passed the test.
A "green card" application card which will be given to you by the driving school
Contacts or glasses, as the DMV will give an eye exam before issuing a permit

After obtaining the permit, the student will receive 6 hours of behind the wheel training (required by law). This is done in one of our school vehicles, all of which are equipped with a dual brake system. The 6 hours are full hours, and we do not include the trip to the DMV as part of the hours. Upon request, at completion of the program, we will issue a certificate of completion of the 6 hour program- free of charge. This certificate is available to anyone who has completed our 6 hour program, regardless of age. Often, this certificate will help lower your auto insurance rates by a significant degree.

After finishing the 6 hour program, the permit is brought back to the DMV (MVC) to validate it, and to assign the student a road test date. When you are ready to take your road test, we offer a road test service which provides you with transportation to your road test in the vehicle in which you had been given lessons.

Our services are door to door. This means that we will pick you up from work, home, or your office, provided that your location is within the perimeter of our service. Lower your auto insurance rates. Remove 2 points from your NJ license. Skillful driving school is proud to offer a New Jersey 6 hour point/insurance reduction course. The course is given either by our office location or can be done online, accessed through our website's homepage. Our classroom course is sponsored by the DSANJ (driving school association of New Jersey).

One common misconception is that our defensive driving course is only intended to take points off of one's driving record. In fact, many people with clean records take this course, since it will often reduce one's insurance rates also, even if you have a clean record!

Any NJ licensed driver from 16 years old and up may benefit from our training. Although our driving school is based on the border of Monmouth/Ocean counties, we will give the course at any location in New Jersey provided there is a group large enough to warrant the travel. For more information, or to set up a course near you, please feel free to call on Skillful Driving School of Lakewood NJ to take care of you.

If you are taking this course to remove points from your license, you may take the course once every five (5) years. It will remove two points from your record.
Reduce your auto insurance rates:
If you are attending this course to reduce the amount you pay for your auto insurance each year, you may take it once every three (3) years. The amount of the reduction on your insurance plan is dependent on your insurance company and your particular plan. Please call your insurance agent or company to find out if you qualify for a reduction.

In order to accommodate diverse work schedules, our course is typically given Saturday and Sunday evenings. You will feel safe and secure knowing that your instructor has been trained by the professionals from the Driving School Association of New Jersey.

Our course location is in Lakewood, New Jersey. We service all of Ocean County, and most of Monmouth County. Frequently Asked Questions
1 What is the process of obtaining a NJ permit for a 16 year old?
First, The student must obtain a Permit from the DMV. This is done in one of two ways. The first way is the student will take a test in school, and if they pass, they will simply go to the DMV to get the actual permit (the school is not authorized to give them the actual permit). By law, the student may only go to the DMV (to get the permit) with a driving school. If the student has not taken the written test in school, or has failed it, they may go take a written test at the DMV, but they too may only go with a driving school

2 How many points are taken off of my record when I attend your defensive driving course?

When you attend our point reduction course, you will have 2 points removed from your NJ license

3 How often can I take the point reduction course?
The Point Reduction Course may be taken once every five years to remove points, and every 3 years for insurance

4 How do I contact the DMV for questions?
You can contact the NJ State Department of Motor Vehicles at 1 (888) 486-3339 or visit them on the web at http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/

Although the State of New Jersey requires all 16 year olds to take 6 hours of behind the wheel training, every student is different. We do not "push" extra lessons unnecessarily. However, we feel strongly that since this is a once in a lifetime investment , one should not start driving on their own until they feel comfortable with their control of a vehicle, as well as with the rules of the road. Our instructors are trained to gear all students toward that goal, and to recognize when a student is ready to go out on their own

6 If I cannot make it to my road test on the date they gave me, what should I do?
Unfortunately, the DMV does not at this time have a special number to call in order to schedule road test appointments. However, you may either visit your local MVC office, or you can go to the NJ DMV web site at http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/. Otherwise, if you would like to cancel your appointment, you just don't show up. When you are ready to reschedule, you must go down to the DMV, call, or go online and schedule your test. If you are one of our students, we can usually take your permit to the DMV to reschedule it for you, or schedule it online

7 Can I use one of your vehicles for my road test?
Absolutely. In fact, we encourage this mode of transportation to the road test. There are a few reasons for this. First of all, if you have taken lessons with us, you will already be comfortable driving our vehicles. Additionally, going with your instructor will instill confidence, and will allow him/her to give you some helpful last minute tips. We also give a 5-10 minute practice session before taking you to the road test. Lastly, all of our vehicles are up to date on insurance, registration and inspection. Additionally, all of our vehicles are equipped with a dual control braking system, thus making the brakes accessible to the examiner (one of the criteria of taking your road test).

8.What do I need for my road test?
A vehicle which has up to date registration, insurance and inspection, has an emergency brake which is accessible to the instructor, and is overall considered to be a safe and clean vehicle is generally acceptable for use for a road test. You must bring your permit, along with the identification you used to get your permit (such as your birth certificate, passport etc.) to the road test.

9 Are lessons given on a one on one basis, or are they given to a few people at a time?
Lessons are given strictly on a one-on-one basis. Our driving scool never pairs people up for lessons. We have found that while some students may have an easy time mastering certain techniques and maneuvers, such as k-turns and parallel parkinh, others may find the same techniques difficult. While one student may be ready to go on to another lesson, the other student might need more practice before moving on.

10 Why do many people take 6 hours of Behind the Wheel training even if they are older than 16?

Many, if not most insurance companies give a significant reduction in auto insurance rates if the insured has completed 6 hours of behind the wheel training at a state certified driving school. We provide a certificate for all students who have completed their 6 hours of behind the wheel training with us

11 I have heard that the DMV agencies are always so busy. Is there a time when it is not crowded?
Of course there is no guarantee, however, we have found that the end and very beginning of each month is particularly crowded. This is because people typically come in at that time to renew licenses and other documents, which expire at the end of the month. The best hours of the day are usually 8:00 a.m. to 11: 45 a.m

First, it is recommended that you read the DMV guidebook thoroughly. You may obtain one by either calling the DMV at1-888-486-3339 or by visiting a DMV agency. Next, you may want to take a look at our sample-test (make a link to ours). A good method of studying the guidebook is to highlight the main points on each page.

13 Which areas do you service?
We service all of Ocean County , and most of Monmouth County . Following is a partial list of places we service: Asbury park, Avon, Barnegat, Bayville, Beachwood, Belmar, Berkeley, Brick, Brielle, Deal, Dover, Eatontown, Elberon, Forked River, Freehold, Holmdel, Howell, Jackson, Lacey, Lanoka Harbor, Lakewood, Lakehurst, Long Branch, Manahawkin, Manalapan, Manasquan, Manchester, Millstone, Neptune, Plumsted, Point pleasant, Ramtown, Seaside heights, South Toms River, Toms River, Tuckerton, Wall, Waretown, West Creek, West Long Branch.
