The 2010 summer season was an exciting one for the Chalfonte Hotel. As in 2009, the hotel underwent some physical improvements over the winter months. In the main hotel, the renovation of six guest rooms was completed to include our beautiful, new signature private baths. In addition to the improvements made with the main building, the Howard Street Cottage was renovated to include eight uniquely-styled guest rooms with private baths, heating and air conditioning. Now known as The Southern Quarters, with the inclusion of heat, The Chalfonte will for the first time be able to accommodate small numbers of guests in the off-season. Finally, the hotel’s exterior has been completely repainted in our signature crisp white with dark green trim and shutters.
This summer, the Chalfonte was fortunate to play host to Cape May native and magnificent talent, Magician Michael Grasso. His weekly show “An Evening of Magic, Comedy, and Oddities” included a verity of performers and consistently sold out the Chalfonte’s Henry Sawyer Theatre. Grasso was called to Hollywood in late August as a Wild Card contestant on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, and went on to wow judges and achieve national fame when he made it to the Top Ten. Grasso is currently traveling the country on tour with the other AGT top finalists. We wish him great success as a truly memorable performer.
The Chalfonte closed its season as host to the 10th Annual Cape May Film Festival. Several hundred guests enjoyed shorts, documentaries and feature films by emerging artists, both local and international. The three day event including appearances by Emmy nominated producer Greg Henry and former Soprano’s star Vincent Pastore, who was presented the “Robert Prosky Character Actor Award.” The festival will return to the Chalfonte next fall, and we look forward to another year of hosting this exciting event!
Last, but certainly not least, The Chalfonte is pleased to announce we have been nominated and accepted into the Historic Hotels of America Association, affiliated with the National Historic Trust. Fewer than 200 hotels throughout the country are members of this very unique group and the Chalfonte Hotel is extremely proud to have been invited to join. One of the most important aspects of the hotel has always been its history and tradition and this affiliation will serve to further encourage and support this dedication.
We have many more new and exciting things coming for 2011 as we celebrate our 135th Anniversary!
