On October 17th, an energetic team of 30 Newark YMCA employees, residents, members and friends walked and raised funds in the 11th annual Making Strides Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Almost 10,000 people participated in Newark, contributing $320,000 toward the elimination of the disease. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Tracye Johnson, the Director of the Healthy Family Adventure Center, a Newark YMCA team made its first showing at the event. The Y had about 30 walkers and raised $1,000!

Norma Pendleton, Human Resources Director at the Newark YMCA’ was eager to support the community and to walk “In tribute to family members, both survivors and deceased, as well as for the future of my six daughters.” Another walker, George Shinhoster, the President and CEO of the Newark YMCA said he was “Glad to be part of a great event in our city.” Team Newark YMCA will be bigger and stronger for next year’s walk, so mark your calendar: October 16th, 2011! New Jersey Partnership For Healthy Kids - Newark Hosts Breakfast of Champions

On Thursday, September 23rd, 100 Newark leaders gathered at the Dryden Mansion to initiate a strategic planning process to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has chosen Newark to be one of five statewide efforts charged with developing recommendations for policy change strategies to reverse the epidemic by 2015. Led by the Newark Y and the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, this community partnership will begin by conducting Community Healthy Living Index assessments throughout Newark’s Central Ward. Councilman Darrin Sharif pledged support for the Partnership's efforts. For information about how your organization can become involved, contact sdavis@newarkymca.org Together, our community can reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity!

This summer, 96 students from France found lodging and community at the Newark YMWCA. Children of French postal workers, the students came from all over France for a two-week vacation to the New York metropolitan area. Chaperoned by Mr. Gilbert Puren, for the French association, AVEA La Poste, the students spent their days touring around New York, from Coney Island to the Museum of Modern Art. For many, this was their first trip to the United States and they were amazed at how much there was to do. Despite the heat wave dominating much of the visit, the students were up and out of the Y early each morning. They would travel by train and bus to the sights of the city, returning later in the day or evening. As guests in the Y Residence, the students were able to use the Y's indoor swimming pool, extensive fitness equipment, gymnasium, racquetball courts and all other amenities.

5 –year-old Anthony is a bundle of energy. He jumps into the pool with a small flotation bubble and away he goes! He kicks his legs, paddles with his arms and pushes off the wall. His swim teacher reminds him to keep his head up. Anthony lifts his head and smiles.
This story is remarkable because Anthony’s learning disability often prevents him from joining in with other kids. The left side of his body doesn’t always work as well as his right. And his mother has a hard time getting him to listen or follow instructions.
But through the Pike class in our Aquatics program, Anthony flourished. Program Director, Luis Terrones describes the joy of watching a child with special needs stand (and swim) on his own,“There’s nothing like it in the world!”
