Dining Out By Suzanne Zimmer Lowery
In many cases, the best way to find a healthy dining option is to seek out an ethnic restaurant where vegetarian eating is far more a part of the mainstream cuisine than it is in America. At Tuptim, the broad range of Thai dishes is sure to please everyone in your party.
The décor at this charming storefront manages to be both festive and serene. Soothing maple paneled walls are lined with authentic Asian artwork and intricate carvings. Vibrant coral-colored cloths line the tables that are topped with matching napkins fanned like flowers in sparkling glasses. Two arches draped in soft seafoam fabric provide a dramatic touch, while beautiful orchids bloom throughout the dining room.
The decorative contrasts are mirrored in the dishes that range from mellow to magnificently spicy. A crowd-pleasing choice for appetizers is the sampler platter for two ($15) that features crispy spring rolls, potato-filled curry puffs, and bright well as skewered chicken satay, and tender grilled shrimp over spicy salad, all served with several dipping sauces.
Pad Thai is a traditional signature dish prepared by Chef Siriphun Meelarb, who has been trained by the Thai government to be a culinary ambassador of sorts. The vegetarian version ($9.95) feature stir-fried noodles with broccoli, snow peas, bean sprouts, tufu, and peanuts, while on the main menu ($10.95) the tufu is replaced by plump shrimp. Yum, a classic salad of fresh herbs tossed with chili peppers and lemon juice, is prepared in a number of ways, but the crispy duck variety ($12.95) enhanced with lemon grass, tart slices of apple, slivers of red onion and tamarind dressing is both fiery and refreshing.
In addition to the vegetarian entrees, there are plenty of poultry, beef, pork, and seafood options. Pad ped frog legs ($17.95) with string beans and basil might be enticing for those looking for something truly different, or Laad Nar Talay ($17.95), saucy shrimp, scallops, calamari, and fresh vegetables over crunchy noodles is a mild, yet flavorful offering.
A surprising, nonetheless delightful selection of desserts like the Key Lime Calypso ($5.95), a stunning round of sponge cake, white chocolate, and lime mousse, garnished with dark chocolate sauce, is unexpected. Those looking for authentic Thai sweets might prefer the sweet sticky rice with fresh mango ($6.50), or fried bananas with honey and sesame seeds ($4). No matter the choice, all the desserts provide the perfect counterpoint to a savory meal.
