A condition in which an abnormal level of pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve, sciatica typically manifests as pain and potential inflammation in the lower back region and one of the legs. In most cases, the painful sensation is restricted to one side of the body, depending on the spot where the sciatic nerve is compressed.
The main factors that contribute to the development of the condition comprise of the herniation of a spinal disk or a bone prod pressing against a section of the nerve. The intensity of the pain caused by sciatica ranges from medium to severe, but in most situations, a surgical intervention is not deemed necessary.
