How does shockwave therapy work?
Low-energy shock waves are directed at the area to be treated. The shocks create little traumas, or “micro traumas,” in the area. So for heel pain, the shock waves are directed at your heel and plantar fascia.

Your body then sees that there are these mini-traumas and sends out the troops to heal the injured area.This healing response means that blood flow increases to the area to bring all the good nutrients and healing chemicals needed to fix the problem.

So, in short, the shocks injure the area which triggers your body to repair the area which then also repairs the chronic heel pain issues and, ultimately, eases the pain.

What can I expect during the treatment?
The treatment is done once a week in our modern family-friendly Clifton, NJ podiatry office. It typically lasts 15 minutes and is done over three to five sessions.

The shock waves are directed at the area to be treated. Foot doctor Clifton, NJ Dr. Velimir Petkov checks in with you about the intensity of the shockwaves and the position and adjusts accordingly. He will typically start at a comfortable low intensity and increase it gradually, taking into consideration your tolerance level.

You don’t have to miss work. You can return to your day-to-day activities right after each session. You will begin to see benefits shortly after and maximum improvement about 3 months after the first treatment.
