How To Identify Malfunctioning Porsche Axles

Porsche axles transfer power from the transmission and differential towards the wheels to make the car move forward. The axles have joints that allow it to flex in order to adapt to different road conditions. These joints are protected against dirt and debris by a rubber boot and they are lubricated with grease to run smoothly.

Signs of Malfunctioning Axles

Because they are directly in charge of driving power for the vehicle to run, the axles and joints are often the most stressed out parts of the car. Be alert on the following signs because they often point out to a problem on the axles.

Loud Clicking Noise with Each Turn

A noticeable symptom of a bad axle is that distinct clicking sound when turning. This could mean that the Porsche axles are heavily worn out that the joints have loosened up producing the clicking sound. The clicks will be louder during either a fast or sharp turn and the sound is more audible on the defective side of the shaft.

Grease Leaks

Another sign that there could be a problem on the axles is a grease leak along the underside of the car or on the inside edge of the tire. This means that the rubber boot may be torn and that the grease that was meant to lubricate the joints has leaked out. When disregarded, this leak could cause the axle to fail because dirt and debris might end up going inside the boot and may damage the joint. The grease can also contaminate the brakes and can cause brake problems so better have the brake pads checked too when repairing leaks. .

Excessive Vibration Even on Smooth Roads

While driving along smooth roads, you may notice that the vehicle is vibrating too much especially near the axles. This could only mean that there is an imbalance on the joints causing the shat to vibrate violently when the car is on. This vibration could worsen when you speed up and may interfere with car handling performance. With this problem, you have no choice but to replace the axles because the vibrations are clear indicators of badly damaged axles.

Driving with a Bad Axle

Yes, it is still possible to have the car running even with damaged axles. However, serious issues and total failure will begin soon after. The real problem is when the axles give in while you are driving. Potentially harming yourself is never okay so have the axles repaired at once when you sense something wrong with them.

Since the axle links the engine and the wheels, it is essential that its optimal performance be maintained in order to ensure your safety in driving the vehicle. As soon as you suspect damage to one or both axles, you must have the car checked immediately. The mechanic will determine if there are parts to be replaced, or there are other repairs that are needed to be done.
