Varicose veins occur mainly on the legs and can become quite large and ropy. Spider veins, on the other hand, are formed from smaller veins and capillaries near the surface of the skin, and can appear in more places – on the legs, ankles, thighs, neck, face, and arms. These discolored veins often appear in a web-like pattern – which is why they're called "spider" veins – and can appear on the surface of the skin as either blue (the color of deoxygenated blood) or red.

These differences aside, spider veins and varicose veins share a number of causes and risk factors – age, gender, and having a family history of vein disease – but spider veins can also be triggered by overexposure to the sun, by hormonal changes, by injury and trauma, or by CVI (chronic venous insufficiency), the same disorder that causes varicose veins. Unlike varicose veins, however, which can cause many painful or even disabling side effects, spider veins are viewed by physicians as primarily a cosmetic problem.

Spider veins can be treated and removed wherever they occur on the body

Wherever they appear, the best spider vein treatment in New Jersey that we specialize in at Chuback Medical Group is equally effective, painless, and safe. A variety of vein treatments can be used to permanently remove spider veins, but the one we use most often is a minimally-invasive procedure called sclerotherapy. This is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in our offices, and takes only about an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated and the number of individual veins being removed. If you have a large number of spider veins and want them all removed, multiple sessions may be needed.

So how does sclerotherapy work to remove my spider veins?

During the procedure, you relax in a comfortable chair or on a table while your New Jersey vascular doctor inserts a tiny needle (smaller than the one used to give you a flu shot) directly into the veins. The process is so painless that most patients don't even ask for a local anesthetic, but of course one is available for those who are sensitive even to a pin prick. Using ultrasound to guide the needle, the doctor then injects a substance that causes the walls of the vein to collapse and, within a few days, close completely. Over the next couple of weeks, the now-closed veins dissolve and are absorbed into the surrounding tissue, while blood flow is automatically rerouted to healthier veins.

So if this procedure is so easy and painless, why don't more people do it?

Why indeed. That's the purpose of this article, to let people know how quickly and easily they can eliminate their spider veins forever and no longer be bothered by them. If you want to find out more about this procedure or one of the top plastic surgery centers in Bergen County, give us a call at 201-693-4847 to get the process started.
