Vein Treatment Center in New Jersey: At-home Treatments
Information may not be reliable

4/11/2016
Dr. John Chuback, founder of a respected vein treatment center in NJ, discusses things you can do at home to relieve your symptoms of vein disease.

As New Jersey vascular doctors, we need to start this and any article that offers "home treatment tips" with a warning and a caveat – these are tips that help to ease your symptoms, and make your life trying to "live with" varicose veins easier.

They are NOT tips or techniques that can actually eliminate varicose veins or reverse the effects of the underlying disease that causes them. Sadly, once your veins have become sufficiently damaged by chronic venous insufficiency to cause varicose veins, there is no way to fix or repair them. Professional vein disease treatment in New Jersey involves closing the damaged veins permanently using procedures such as sclerotherapy, micro phlebectomy, or endovenous laser treatment. But if your New Jersey vein expert has determined that your varicose veins are currently not causing more serious side effects, the following tips can make them easier to live with.

7 things you can do at home to relieve symptoms caused by vein disease

·         If you smoke, STOP! Stopping smoking will not only improve your circulation enough to reduce many unpleasant symptoms of vein disease, it can cut your risk of heart disease and stroke in half within a couple of months.

·         Watch your diet, and if you need to, lose weight. Every extra pound you carry around puts increased pressure on your veins, so it increases the pain you feel from your varicose veins. Ask your doctor for help losing weight.

·         Get more exercise. Yes, we understand that if you're already in pain from varicose veins this tip sounds counter-intuitive and unrealistic. But really, it's important – if you react to the discomfort caused by your varicose veins by becoming a couch potato, the symptoms will just get worse. So try to walk or perform some other gentle exercise at least half an hour every day.

·         Don't sit for long periods of time. Even if your job requires you to sit at a desk all day, make sure to get up and walk around often – at a minimum, once every hour. Doing this will help restore circulation in your legs and prevent pain and cramping.

·         Avoid tight clothing and high heels. Tight clothing, such as "Spanx" or pants that are tight at the waist, impairs your circulation. High heels also put your body at an odd angle when you walk or stand, increasing pressure on your veins.

·         Whenever you can, take breaks and "put your feet up." Relaxing with your legs elevated is one of the best ways to reduce pain and swelling.

·         Try compression stockings. Medical-grade elastic stockings can make a huge difference by improving circulation in your legs. Your doctor can help you find the proper size and compression to match your condition.
