Every great sports organization wants the same thing and that is a lighting system that will cater to the needs of broadcasters, players, spectators and also officials and at the same time must not spill any unnecessary light into the environment and also should not disturb the neighborhood. Light pollution is an increasing threat. Light from stadiums has been reported to affect both amateur and professional astronomy. Unnecessary light in the environment also interferes with the life of the nocturnal animals and thus ultimately disrupts their ecosystems. Not only this, but it also affects the circadian rhythms of all the living creatures including humans. Last but not the least it wastes a lot of energy and due to this stadium lighting is undergoing vast changes from the technical point of view to avoid all the problems mentioned above.
Sports lighting is very much different from other forms of lighting and it is not known by many. There are various aspects of sports lighting. Lighting can be done according to the general standards but various popular sports organizations have set their own rules and standards regarding the stadium flood lights and various other lighting prospects. Now let us see what things are kept in mind while deciding the lighting of the stadium.
Two forms of illuminance are kept in mind while fixing the sports lighting fixtures – horizontal and vertical. Horizontal illuminance is considered by keeping in mind an imaginary horizontal surface and similarly in case of vertical illuminance a vertical imaginary surface is kept in mind. One thing is to be kept in mind while setting up the vertical luminaries is that the players face and their respective numbers should always be visible to the spectators clearly.
Uniformity of the floodlights is a very important factor that must be kept in mind. If the light is uniform then it is easier for both the players and the spectators to see everything clearly. It also eases the work of the photographers and makes the broadcast on TV clearer.
The glare should not be present in any of the fixtures or floodlights. It happens when the luminance of the lights becomes much greater than the amount of luminance to which the observer is adapted. This ultimately causes discomfort and problem in seeing.
The lights that are put up in the stadium must be flicker-free apart from the other conditions that need to be fulfilled.
If the above mentioned qualities are not properly looked over, then the floodlights will not create the perfect luminance. The main condition that must be fulfilled by the floodlights is that there must be a proper visual playing condition and the shadows must be reduced as much as possible.
All the above qualities are the reason why the HID (high-intensity discharge) lamps are now being changed. Instead of the HID lamps Led lamps are being used. LEDs are more flexible and innovative. With the use of the LEDs, another advantage is that there is no need for color editing for the television recordings and thus this has reduced the cost a lot.
